Ladies and gentleman, I passed my defense!
So now I'm starting my new life in Dallas, Texas. I drove 12 hrs from Ames to Dallas last weekend. After some hectic apartment hunting I moved into a nice condo conviniently located among downtown, bars and work.
Everything seems to be nice. One thing for sure though is that things are more expensive here than in Ames! yikes!

My fucked-up life----never an end to it
I officially dropped the application for graduation today. I worked my ass off to get things done these two weeks but it now seems futile. My professor thinks its ridiculous to defense in three weeks.
The thing is, it's not my fault. I have done everything I could in order to get it done. I finished all the required courses way before normal students do, and spent tremendous amount of time into researching. I did what I should do and I expect the minimal output of graduation.
This is the second time I cancelled my graduation. I could have completed it in May and enjoyed my 4 month stress-free vacation before work starts. Now I don't even know if I can keep the job.
My life is completely fucked up. I might run into visa issues. My job is pending. My parents won't be able to come attend my commencement this summer. I hate every second in ames. Coming to ames in the biggest mistake in my life. If I'm into sports i think it's time for me to be a Hawk now. Go Hawks! Beat Cyclone! I hate it I hate it I hate it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy to get a good deal with ticket
After getting the hiring manager's approval of postponing the onsite interview for a week, I booked my flight from Des Moines to Dallas yesterday morning on travelocity.com. I was happy because I thought I had a good deal: Midwest Airline charges only 340 dollars with one stop at Milwakee, WI.
However I looked at Studentuniverse.com tonight, and found those outrageously expensive by AA on travelocity was sold at a fixed price of 304 dollars! So I cancelled my reservation at travelocity and booked from studentuniverse.com. Although I have to pay the $7 non-refundable fee, it's so much better with direct flight and reasonable time, at least saves me a lot of hours of waiting while I transfer.
Intersting enough, I should be familiar with this kind of price differentiation. Charging differnt prices for different time, date, is a common pracitce in the airline industry, known as Revenue Management. I'm still shocked by how "insensitive" the prices are with regard to time in a single day by StudentUniverse.
Anyway, as a rule of thumb I will start looking at student universe whenver I want to travel now. Hopefully this trip will be rewarding enought, and I can get the job.

Horrible Phone Interview
So I had a phone interview an hour before my research meeting this afternoon. It sucks.
I wasn't prepared at all, since now that I've been hired by the headquater, I would imagine the call to be more of an interactive way for us to get to know each other. However, I was asked the same boring questions about crisis handeling in workplace.
My whole mind was focused on research and my thesis right now. It seemed a million years ago that I actually was engaged in any kind of teamwork. So naturally I ran out of examples. It was so embarassing that I don't even want to think about it.
So now I'm considering whether I should send the hiring manager a thank you letter. Even though I'm pretty sure the result won't be good, maybe I should send him one so as to show my appreciation for his time.

Hectic Days
Things are not working as I expected lately. It all started with my professor asking me last week after a 3-hr research meeting. "What do you think of defensing early August?"
"Early August? I must defense before July 18 in order for summer graduation!" I was in astonishment.
"Given the your speed it'd be very tricky if you can meet the deadline." He continued.
So there starts my nightmare-ish days: working from 10am to 2am everyday. Working on math and papers like crazy. Man I need a break!
